Pakistan will address Mohammad Rizwan’s contentious dismissal from the second Test with the ICC: “This must be dealt with.”

After Mohammad Rizwan was controversially dismissed during the second Test match against Australia, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) brought up umpiring and technology-related problems with the International Cricket Council (ICC). The on-field umpire first denied appeals for a caught behind by Australian captain Pat Cummins against Rizwan during Pakistan’s 317-run chase in the match, but the ruling was reversed via the Decision Review System (DRS). ‘Snickometer’ showed a spike when the ball was barely over Rizwan’s wrist, which infuriated the Pakistani side.

After Pakistan lost the Test match in Melbourne by 79 runs, Zaka Ashraf, the chairman of PCB, allegedly had a conversation with Mohammed Hafeez, the team director. PTI reports that Hafeez voiced complaints to the PCB about the ICC over the umpiring decisions and the use of technology during the match. The MCC Play Committee and the ICC Cricket Committee evaluate the rules before the ICC Executive Board approves them, which control both technology usage and play.

During the post-match news conference at the MCG, Hafeez was clearly unhappy and emphasized the need to address uneven umpiring and the difficulties presented by technology. “If you watch the whole game, the umpires made a lot of inconsistent calls. We all understand the fundamentals of this lovely game of cricket, which we play out of natural instinct.”

But sometimes, it seems like technology is getting more attention than the game of cricket itself. I think this is a problem that has to be solved,” he said. Hafeez highlighted the significance of certainty and clarity in the sport, stating that although he is open to the use of technology in the game, he questions its usefulness when it breeds uncertainty and confusion.

“I have nothing against in-game technologies. But it’s unacceptable if it creates uncertainty and misunderstanding. There were certain choices that made no sense. Every time the ball strikes the stumps, it is out. He had said, “I will never understand why there is an umpire’s call.”

The Pakistan team director further said that after the match, he spoke with Rizwan, the wicketkeeper-batsman, and he claimed that the ball had not touched his gloves. In order to reverse the on-field umpire’s ruling, he emphasized the need of compelling proof.
